To understand the 60's, you have to realize that it was a "coming of age" of youth that were born in the years after World War II, when soldiers returned home and started families. Because of sheer numbers, it only makes sense that the best songs would result. Add to the demographic factor the developing of a conscience and the realization that the generation could make a difference and change the world, and you have the makings of, in essence, a cultural renaissance. Young people saw the world around them, Vietnam, Watergate, the senseless assassinations, entrepreneurial greed, etc. and were angered.
The "hippie movement" was centered in San Francisco, California, and many of the great rock acts sprung up from the City by the Bay as well. This durable act is one of that city's best, and Jefferson Airplane's first single was a smash.
