Marvin Hamlisch, legendary composer of countless scores for movies, television and theater shows, died last night in his home in Los Angeles at the age of 68.
Hamlisch wrote the Pulitzer Prize-winning score for A Chorus Line as well as They're Playing Our Song and The Goodbye Girl and earned three Oscars, four Grammys, four Emmys, a Tony and three Golden Globe awards. Hamlisch also wrote scores for 40 movies including The Way We Were and The Sting. In 1973, Hamlisch became just the second person to win three Academy Awards in the same evening, following Billy Wilder in 1960. Hamlisch is one of 11 people to win an Oscar, a Tony, an Emmy and a Grammy.
A graduate of the Julliard School of Music, Hamlisch was the principal conductor at various American orchestras, including the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra and the Pasadena, San Diego and Seattle Symphonies.
