Alecia Moore was born in Abington, Pennsylvania, and she grew up in Doylestown. She was a gymnast for eight years, but she was inspired at an early age to becoming a singer. Alecia joined the band Middleground in high school, but it disbanded shortly afterwards. Moore began writing lyrics as a teenager, and she began performing in clubs in Philadelphia at the age of 14, adopting the stage name of "Pink" about this time.
Pink joined the all-female band Basic Instinct, but that group too disbanded without releasing any music. At the age of 16, Pink formed the group Choice and their song "Key to My Heart" was mailed to LaFace Records. L.A. Reid heard it and arranged for the group to fly to Atlanta, Georgia so he could see them perform. Choice signed a recording contract and relocated to Atlanta shortly afterwards. The group recorded an album which was not released, but "Key To My Heart" was included on the 1996 soundtrack for the movie Kazaam. That Christmas, Reid told Pink to either go solo or go home. Choice broke up in 1998. Pink graduated from Central Bucks High School West, and began working on a solo album.
Pink worked with producers including Babyface. The single "There You Go" was released in 2000, reaching #2 in Australia, #6 in the U.K., Canada and New Zealand and #7 in the United States and selling over one million copies. Pink received the MTV Video Music Award for Best New Artist.
Pink released her debut album Can't Take Me Home, which has now sold over two million copies in the U.S. alone and over four million units around the world. "Most Girls" was the next single, reaching #1 in Australia, #2 in Canada and New Zealand, #4 in the United States and #5 in the U.K.
Pink won a Billboard Music Award for Best Pop New Artist and a Blockbuster Entertainment Award for Favorite New Artist-Female. She was also nominated for Favorite Soul/R&B New Artist at the American Music Awards. "You Make Me Sick" hit #9 in the U.K., but was a mid-charter most other places.
