Britney Spears, The #23 Female Artist of the Rock Era

Britney Spears was born in McComb, Mississippi and raised in Kentwood, Louisiana. She began taking dance lessons when she was three, and also took voice lessons and participated in gymnastics as a child.  She won several talent shows and state-level competitions and acted in several stage productions and television shows as a child. 


At age eight, Spears and her mother traveled to Atlanta, Georgia to audition for a 1990s revival of The Mickey Mouse Club.  The director felt she was too young, but introduced her to talent agent Nancy Carson, who suggested Britney enroll in the Professional Performing Arts School.

Shortly after, the family moved to New York City and Britney secured her first professional role in the Off-Broadway musical Ruthless!  Britney also appeared on Star Search and acted in several commercials.

In 1992, returned to Kentwood to enroll in Parklane Academy in McComb.  She was the point guard on her school's basketball team.

In 1997, Spears recorded a demo tape and pitched it to executives from four recording labels in New York City.  Two weeks later, executives from Jive Records phoned to express interest.  She returned to New York, sang Whitney Houston's "I Have Nothing" for them, and signed a recording contract. 


Spears recorded half of her debut album at Cheiron Studios in Stockholm.  When she returned home, Britney began a promotional tour of shopping malls to promote her upcoming album.  She opened for 'N Sync on her first tour and released her debut album, ...Baby One More Time, in 1999.  It debuted at #1 on the Album chart.  The title song was released as the first single, and it rocketed to #1 in every country in the world, selling 500,000 copies on its first day. 

Britney's first single has now sold over 10 million copies, making it one of the top-selling singles of all-time, and it was nominated for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance at the Grammy Awards.  The song also helped earn Spears an American Music Award for Pop/Rock New Artist and a nomination for Favorite Pop/Rock Female Artist and another Grammy nomination for Best New Artist.  In addition, Spears also won a People's Choice Award for Best International Artist.

The video for "...Baby" received MTV Video Music Awards for Best Pop Video, Best Female Video and International Viewer's Choice.  Spears' second single, "Sometimes" reached #1 in New Zealand, #2 in Australia, #3 in the U.K., #4 in Sweden, #5 in Germany and Ireland, #7 in Canada and Switzerland and #9 in France.







"(You Drive Me) Crazy" was a Top 10 smash in every country except Australia (at #12), achieving its greatest success in New Zealand and France, where it peaked at #2.  The video was nominated for Best Dance Video at the MTV Video Music Awards.

Spears won six Billboard Music Awards (Female Artist of the Year, Best Album Artist, Hot 100 Singles Artist, Female Album Artist of the Year, Best New Artist of the Year and Best New Pop Artist and she was also nominated for Album of the Year.



Spears captured the World Music Award for World's Best-Selling Female Pop Artist.  She headlined her first tour in 1999 to promote the debut.  A fourth single from the album, "Born To Make You Happy" was not released in North America, but hit #1 in the U.K. and Ireland, and was #2 in Sweden.

Spears won a People's Choice Award for Best International Artist.  Her debut album has now been certified as having sold over 14 million albums in the U.S. and 30 million worldwide, the best-selling album in history by a teenage solo artist, and the best-selling debut album as well; it went to #1 in 15 countries.  



Britney's follow-up album, ...Oops I Did It Again, debuted at #1 upon its release, selling over 1.3 million copies the first week.  The lead single had a lot to do with that, shooting to #1 in the U.K., Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Sweden and Switzerland, #2 in Germany and Ireland, #4 in France and #9 in the United States.  The accompanying video was nominated for Best Pop Video, Best Female Video and Viewer's Choice at the MTV Video Music Awards.
  

Spears' follow-up sold nearly as well as her debut, with 25 million copies worldwide.  Britney earned Grammy nominations for Best Pop Vocal Album and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance.  She won Billboard Music Awards for Album Artist of the Year, Highest One-Week Album Sales by a Female Artist in History and World-Record Breaker of 2000.  

Spears also repeated her win at the World Music Award for World's Best-Selling Female Pop Artist (she was also nominated for Best-Selling Female Dance Artist) and she received American Music Award nominations for Favorite Pop/Rock Female Artist and Favorite Pop/Rock Album.  Britney also won a Blockbuster Entertainment Award for Favorite Female Pop Artist and she was nominated for Favorite Female Musical Performer at the People's Choice Awards. 


The single "Lucky" landed at #1 in Germany, Sweden and Switzerland, hit #2 in Canada and Ireland, #3 in Australia, #4 in New Zealand and #5 in the U.K.








Britney's tour grossed $40.5 million.  She released her book Britney Spears' Heart-to-Heart.  The single "Stronger" reached #4 in Germany and Sweden, #6 in Ireland and Switzerland, #7 in the U.K., #9 in Canada and #11 in the U.S., and was nominated for Best Pop Video at the MTV Video Music Awards.





In 2001, Spears signed a promotional deal with Pepsi, reportedly worth over $7 million, and released another book co-written with her mother, entitled A Mother's Gift.  Spears released the album Britney in November.  The album debuted at #1 in the U.S. and sold over 12 million copies worldwide.  "I'm A Slave 4 (sic) U (sic)" hit #4 in the U.K. and was a Top 10 song everywhere in the world except the United States and New Zealand.  The video was nominated for Best Female Video and Best Dance Video at the MTV Video Music Awards.


Spears earned Grammy nominations for Best Pop Vocal Album and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance (for "Overprotected").  The single reached #2 in Sweden, #4 in the U.K. and #9 in Ireland.

Britney received a World Music Award nomination for Best-Selling Female Pop Artist.  Britney's third world tour grossed $43.7 million, second only to Cher's Farewell Tour among female artists in 2002.  Britney released the single "I'm Not a Girl, Not Yet a Woman" in Europe and Australia and she was rewarded with a #2 smash in the U.K., #3 in Ireland, #4 in Sweden, and she peaked at #7 in Australia and #10 in Germany.  


Spears starred in her first movie in 2002, Crossroads, and opened the restaurant, Nyla, in New York City, but it closed five months later.  


Spears released the album In the Zone in 2003, writing and co-producing most of the material on the album.  Once again, the album debuted at #1, selling over 609,000 copies its first week.  Britney collaborated with Madonna on the song "Me Against The Music", which was a #1 smash in Australia and Ireland and reached #2 in the U.K. and Canada, #4 in Switzerland and #5 in Germany and New Zealand.  The song captured Billboard Music Awards for Hot Dance Sales Single of the Year and Best-Selling Dance Single of the Year, and Spears was nominated for Female Artist of the Year and Mainstream Top 40 Artist of the Year.  


In The Zone has now sold over 10 million copies worldwide.

"Toxic" won the Grammy Award, Britney's only career Grammy trophy, for Best Dance Recording.  She was nominated for Favorite International Artist at the People's Choice Awards.   "Toxic" topped charts in the U.K., Australia, Canada and Ireland and won Spears her first Grammy Award for Best Dance Recording.  She was also nominated for Video of the Year, Best Pop Video, Best Female Video and Best Dance Video at the MTV Video Music Awards.




The follow-up single, "Everytime", was a Top 5 smash everywhere in the world except the U.S., where it stalled at #15.  It reached #1 in the U.K., Australia and Ireland.

Spears began a tour to support the album, but fell and injured her knee while shooting the video for "Outrageous".  She underwent arthroscopic surgery and had to cancel the tour.


In 2004, Spears released a fragrance with Elizabeth Arden, Curious.  Later in the year, Britney took a break from music to start a family.  Spears scored another #1 Irish hit when she released the new single "My Prerogative" from her compilation package, Greatest Hits:  My Prerogative in 2004, also a #3 hit in the U.K. and Germany and #4 in Switzerland, #6 in Sweden and #7 in Australia.  


The greatest hits album sold over five million copies worldwide.  In 2007, Spears stayed in a drug rehabilitation facility in Antigua for less than a day.  The next night, she shaved her head, and admitted herself to other treatment facilities in the coming months.  In October, Britney lost custody of her children to former husband Keven Federline. 

Spears was also sued for her music video "Do Somethin' (sic)" for upholstering her Hummer interior in counterfeit Louis Vuitton cherry blossom fabric. 

In 2007, Spears released the album Blackout, which became her first album not to debut at #1, opening at #2.  The lead single, "Gimme' (sic) More", reached #1 in Canada and peaked at #2 in Ireland, #3 in the U.S., the U.K. and Australia, #4 in Switzerland and #5 in France.  





Blackout has sold over three million copies worldwide.  "Piece Of Me" hit #1 in Ireland, #2 in the U.K. and Australia, #4 in New Zealand and #5 in Canada.  Spears won her first three MTV Video Music Awards:  Video of the Year, Best Pop Video and Best Female Video.

A third single, "Break The Ice" received significant airplay, reaching #9 in Canada but a mid-charter everywhere else.  In January of 2008, Spears refused to relinquish custody of her sons to Federline.  She was taken to the hospital at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center after police that arrived at her house noticed she was under the influence of an illegal substance.  

The following day, Spears's visitation rights were suspended at an emergency court hearing.  Britney was committed to the psychiatric ward of Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center and put on involuntary psychiatric hold.  In July, Spears regained some visitation rights after reaching an agreement with Federline.

Britney released a 60-minute introspective documentary, Britney:  For the Record, to coincide with her return to the industry.  MTV broadcast the documentary, landing the highest Sunday night ratings (at 5.6 million viewers) in its history.  

In 2008, Spears released the album Circus, which debuted at #1.  The single "Womanizer" reached #1 in the U.S., Canada, Sweden and France, and reached #2 in Ireland and Switzerland, #3 in the U.K., #4 in Germany, #5 in Australia and #9 in New Zealand.  Spears was nominated for Best Dance Recording at the Grammys, and she won Best Pop Video and was nominated for Video of the Year. 






The title track reached #2 in Canada, #3 in the United States, #4 in New Zealand, #6 in Australia and Sweden.


Circus has now sold over four million copies worldwide.  The single "3" was released from the album The Singles Collection.     

Britney appeared in the show How I Met Your Mother, and was nominated for a People's Choice Award for Favorite Scene Stealing Guest Star.   

In 2009, Spears' tour was the fifth-highest grossing tour of the year at $131.8 million.  Spears was nominated for Favorite Female Artist and Favorite Pop Artist at the People's Choice Awards. 

 
In 2011, Britney released her seventh studio album Femme Fatale. Once again, she debuted at #1 on the Album chart in the U.S. and peaked in the Top 10 on nearly every other chart in the world. The single "Hold It Against Me" debuted at #1, as these days a lack of competition makes such events possible. It also reached #1 in Canada and New Zealand, #4 in Australia, #5 in Ireland, #6 in the U.K., #7 in Switzerland and #9 in Sweden.




Femme Fatale tied Spears with Mariah Carey and Janet Jackson for the third-most number one albums among women.  It went Platinum in the U.S. and over 2 million worldwide.  The follow-up was "Till The World Ends", which reached #3 in the U.S., #4 in Canada and Sweden, #7 in Ireland and Switzerland, #8 in Australia and France and #10 in New Zealand.  Spears took home the trophy for Best Pop Video at the MTV Video Music Awards, and she also received the MTV Video Vanguard Award.


Spears was nominated for Favorite Artist, Most Influential Style and Best Dance Artist and "Till The World Ends" was nominated for Best Dance Song at the Billboard Music Awards.  Femme Fatale was nominated for Favorite Album of the Year at the People's Choice Awards.  Spears scored her 29th career hit in at least one country with "I Wanna' Go", which reached #5 in Canada and France and #7 in the U.S.


Britney appeared in the television show Glee, and was nominated for another People's Choice Award, this time for Favorite TV Guest Star.
     
In 2011, Britney joined Rihanna for the single "S&M", a #1 song in the United States, Australia and Canada, #2 in Germany, New Zealand, Sweden and Switzerland, and #3 in the U.K., Ireland and France.


Spears gave 79 shows on a world tour.  The following year, she combined with will.i.am on the single "Scream & Shout". It went to #1 in 24 countries, including the U.K., Canada, Germany, Ireland, Switzerland and France, and it hit #2 in Australia and Sweden and #3 in the United States.

Will.i.am produced Spears next album, Britney Jean.  Her first two singles were not able to find the Top 10, but she is nominated for five World Music Awards:  World's Best Female Artist, World's Best Entertainer of the Year, World's Best Live Act and two for "Scream & Shout"--World's Best Song and World's Best Video.  

Spears was nominated for two People's Choice Awards:  Favorite Pop Artist and Favorite Female Artist and she won the trophy for the former.

In 2013, Spears began a residency at Planet Hollywood in Las Vegas, Nevada.  

Spears is now the 8th top-selling female artist in the United States with 34 million certified albums sold; her worldwide sales are over 100 million albums.  Spears has won nine Billboard Music Awards and one Grammy Award. Britney has 23 Top 40 hits to her credit, with 13 of those reaching the Top 10 and five #1 songs.
