Gloria Estefan & Miami Sound Machine

Here's a song that struck Gold and reached the Top 10 in five countries.  It is from the second English language album that Miami Sound Machine did.

Love Touch

Rod Stewart

This is a song from the soundtrack to the movie Legal Eagles starring Robert Redford, Debra Winger & Daryl Hannah.  Rod Stewart took it to the Top 10.

Pretenders

After drug-related deaths left the Pretenders with two living members, Chrissie Hynde soldiered on and reformed them for a mid-'80s run that included this song.

Not only was Stevie Nicks one of the great songwriters and lead vocalists for Fleetwood Mac, but she also enjoyed considerable solo success during the decade.

This Date in Rock Music History: May 24

1968:  The Rolling Stones released the single "Jumpin' Jack Flash".
1969:  The Guess Who appeared on American Bandstand.










1969:  "Get Back" gave the Beatles their 17th #1 song, leaving them just one shy of Elvis Presley's record, despite Elvis being an artist for 14 years and the Beatles just 6 at that time.  They would get that #1 and more the next year.  "Aquarius" slipped only to #2 after six weeks in the #1 spot.  Mercy was in with the giants at #3 with "Love (Can Make You Happy)" while "Hair" from the Cowsills fell off.  The rest of the Top 10:  "Oh Happy Day" moved nicely (12-5) for the Edwin Hawkins Singers, the Isley Brothers with "It's Your Thing", Donovan with "Atlantis", Simon & Garfunkel were down with "The Boxer", Ray Stevens placed "Gitarzan" at #9 and the Guess Who remained at #10 with "These Eyes".
1970:  Peter Green announced that he was leaving Fleetwood Mac.
1974:  Olivia Newton-John and Boz Scaggs appeared on The Midnight Special.

Oran "Juice" Jones

This Houston-born singer achieved a rarity when he landed at #1 with the only charting song of his career.  Jones was nominated for two Grammy Awards for this song, but when he could not reach the Hot 100 again, he left the music business after his third album.

Stevie Wonder, one of the brightest stars of the '60s and '70s, proved he was still a force in the '80s--he has #90 for the year.

Sade

Sade won the Grammy Award for Best New Artist of 1985, and she kept right on going.  This song went unnoticed by many in 1986 with a peak of #20, but like Sade, it has gotten stronger over the years.

Rum D.M.C. with Aerosmith

Boston's Aerosmith had a big hit in 1977 with this song, and when it came time for Run D.M.C. to remake it, they invited Aerosmith to play along.

The Captain Of Her Heart

Double

The Swiss duo Double gave us this song, another that has gotten stronger over the years.  In 1986, it stalled at #16 but in 2016, it is The #87 Song of the Year*.

Dire Straits

Here is the lead single from what proved to be the best-selling album in the career of Dire Straits, Brothers in Arms, even though their self-titled debut in 1978 is better.

Thompson Twins

This group went through several lineup changes before Tom Bailey, Joe Leeway and Alannah Currie clicked as a trio.  They achieved 11 hits in the decade, but this was their final Top 10 in 1986.

I'll Be Over You

Toto

This talented Los Angeles group released this song just three years after dominating the 1983 Grammy Awards with five trophies.  They proved they could slow it down with this multi-format hit.

Tonight She Comes

Cars

Here's another Boston group in The Top 100*--they are one of the best ever from that city.  They released their Greatest Hits package in 1986 which included this new song.

Robert Palmer

This artist achieved his breakthrough hit in 1978 with "Every Kinda' People".  He scored his biggest career hit in 1985 with "Addicted To Love" and was back in '86 with this one.
