He formed the E Street Band in 1973, but he was originally more successful as a songwriter for other artists, most notably "Blinded By the Light" by Manfred Mann's Earth Band and "Fire" by the Pointer Sisters. Finally, his career took flight and in 1987, he landed his 10th Top 10 song--Bruce Springsteen:
