Many websites report that on February 19, 1964, Simon and Garfunkel finished recording the acoustic version of "The Sounds Of Silence". This is not true--according to the official website for Simon and Garfunkel, they recorded the song on March 10. When their album Wednesday Morning 3 A.M. flopped, the duo broke up, with Garfunkel returning to study at Columbia University and Simon going to England. Unbeknownst to either Simon or Garfunkel, producer Tom Wilson remixed the song, overdubbing electric instruments and releasing that version as a single. The rest, as they say, is history.
