Bryan Adams, The #48 Artist of the Rock Era, Part Two

In 1991, Adams released another career highlight with the album Waking Up the Neighbours, which went to #1 in the U.K. and Germany.  Of special note is the use of counter melodies, where the piano does one thing and the vocals do another.  "(Everything I Do) I Do It For You" (also featured in the great movie Robin Hood:  Prince of Thieves), rocketed to #1 in every major country in the world.  It remained at #1 for seven weeks in the U.S. and sold over three million copies and set a record when it dominated the U.K. chart with 16 weeks at the top.

"(Everything I Do) I Do It For You" won the Grammy Award for Best Song Written Specifically for a Motion Picture or Television.  Adams was also nominated for Song of the Year, Record of the Year and Best Pop Vocal Performance, Male. Bryan won an American Music Award for Favorite Pop/Rock Single and was nominated for Favorite Pop/Rock Male Artist and he was nominated for Best Original Song from a Motion Picture at both the Golden Globe Awards and the Academy Awards and for Best Video from a Film at the MTV Video Music Awards.  

 

He released "Can't Stop This Thing We Started", a #1 smash in Canada that also reached #2 in the U.S., #3 in Sweden, #4 in Ireland, #8 in Switzerland and #10 in the Netherlands.  The single has sold over three million copies.  "Can't Stop This Thing We Started" was nominated for Best Rock Song and Best Rock Performance at the 1992 Grammys.

 "There Will Never Be Another Tonight" was lined up next, another #2 in Canada that reached #6 on the Rock chart in the United States.  It was nominated for Best Rock Performance at the 1993 Grammy Awards.

 

Bryan released "Thought I'd Died And Gone To Heaven", which hit #1 in Canada, #8 in the U.K. and #13 in the U.S.

 

The origins of this song are from a mid-tempo song called "Rescue Me".  Adams, Vallence, and producer Robert "Mutt" Lange reworked it and "Do I Have To Say The Words?" climbed to #5 on the Adult Contemporary chart and #11 overall in the U.S. and #2 in Canada. 

 

For nearly two years, Adams toured the world in support of the album.   Adams released the compilation album So Far So Good, which included the new song "Please Forgive Me".  #2 AC and #7 Popular in the United States, #1 in Canada, Australia and Ireland, #2 in the U.K, Sweden and Switzerland and #3 in West Germany and the Netherlands.

In 1993, Bryan worked with Rod Stewart and Sting on the song "All For Love" from the movie Three Musketeers.  The trio celebrated a #1 song of three weeks that sold over one million copies.  It topped charts in every major country except a #2 peak in the U.K. and #3 in the Netherlands.  The song was nominated for Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals at the Grammy Awards.

  

In 1995, Adams scored another cinematic hit with "Have You Ever Really Loved A Woman?" from the movie Don Juan DeMarco.  It went to #1 for five weeks in the U.S. and also led the way in Canada and Australia and reached the Top 10 in every major country.

"Have You Ever Really Loved A Woman?" was nominated for Best Pop Vocal Performance and Best Song Written for a Motion Picture, Television or Other Visual Media at the Grammy Awards and Bryan scored nominations for Best Original Song from a Motion Picture at the Golden Globe Awards and the Academy Awards and a nomination for Best Video from a Film at the MTV Video Music Awards.

Adams released the album 18 til I Die in 1996.  The lead single, "The Only Thing That Looks Good On Me Is You", did well in Canada where it reached #1, but it received spotty airplay elsewhere.  One of many songs Adams co-wrote with Robert "Mutt" Lange.  Adams says working with Lange is "like going to the university of Rock".  Bryan earned an MTV Video Music Award nomination for Best Male Video.

 

The album has sold over one million copies in the U.S.  "Let's Make A Night To Remember" reached #6 on the AC chart and was another #1 smash in Canada.  

The song earned Bryan another Grammy nomination for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance while "The Only Thing That Looks Good On Me Is You" earned a nomination for Best Male Rock Vocal Performance.

 Adams and Barbra Streisand teamed up for "I Finally Found Someone" from the Streisand movie The Mirror Has Two Faces.  It jumped to #2 on the Adult Contemporary chart and also hit #1 in Ireland.  The two superstars earned a Grammy Nomination for Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals and nominations for Best Original Song from a Motion Picture at the Golden Globe Awards and the Academy Awards.

 Adams was nominated for Favorite Pop/Rock Male Artist at the American Music Awards.  He enjoyed another Top 5 AC hit with "I'll Always Be Right There".

In 1997, Bryan released his MTV Unplugged album, and signed a new contract with Interscope Records.

<  Adams released the album On a Day Like Today in 1998,  "Cloud Number Nine" hit #6 in the U.K. and 7 in Canada.

 Adams released another compilation, The Best of Me.  The title song is one of his career best.  

 

In 2002, Adams composed and recorded songs for the animated movie Spirit:  Stallion of the Cimarron.  "Here I Am" peaked at #5 AC in the United States and #5 in the U.K. and was nominated for Best Original Song from a Motion Picture at the Golden Globe Awards.

Adams released the album Room Service in 2004, with the two-disc compilation album Anthology coming out in 2005.

Adams received another Golden Globe nomination for the song "Never Gonna' Break My Faith" from the movie Bobby.

In 2006, Bryan was named an Officer of the Order of Canada.

In 2008, Bryan released his album 11 in 2008.  He also became of of four artists to be featured in the second series of stamps released by Canada Post.

In 2010, Adams received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.  Bryan received the Governor General's Performing Artist Award for Lifetime Artistic Achievement.  

Adams and Vallance wrote "Bang The Drum", performed during the opening ceremony of the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, British Columbia.  Adams released the acoustic album Bare Bones in 2010.

In 2011, Bryan was inducted into the Hollywood Walk of Fame.  By 2014, Adams changed to Verve Records and released the album Tracks of My Years and finished the album Get Up in time for release in 2015.

Adams has been recognized for his work in photography, given an Honorary Fellowship of the Royal Photographic Society in London.  His work has been published in Vogue, Harper's Bazaar, GQ, Esquire and others.

Adams has 25 career hits to his credit, with 11 of those going Top 10 and four #1's.  He has 12 hits on the AC chart with 9 Top 10's and two #1's. The versatile Adams also has 29 hits on the Rock chart with 15 Top 10 songs and two #1's.  

Adams has won one Grammy Award among 15 nominations, one American Music Award out of three nominations, one MTV Music Award from five nominations and has been nominated five times for Golden Globe Awards and three times for Academy Awards.
