#190--"Glory" by John Legend and Common (from the movie Selma--2014)
John Legend, Common and Rhymefest teamed up to write Song #190*, "Glory" from the acclaimed movie Selma. The movie depicts the 1965 Selma to Montgomery Alabama marches for civil rights.
David Oyelowo gave a superb performance as Martin Luther King, Jr., joined in the cast by Tom Wilkinson as U.S. President Lyndon B. Johnson, Tim Roth as George Wallace and Carmen Ejogo as Coretta Scott King.
Oyelowo began his stage career working for the Royal Shakespeare Company, then made a name for himself as MI5 officer Danny Hunter in the British drama series Spooks. He has also starred in The Help, Rise of the Planet of the Apes, Lincoln (he's Corporal Clark, who has a brief conversation with President Lincoln about what he will do after the war), Jack Reacher and The Butler, among others.
The song stalled at #49 but won Best Original Song at the Academy Awards and the Golden Globes and captured a Grammy Award for Best Song Written for Visual Media. Selma won the Oscar for Best Motion Picture of the Year and was nominated for three Golden Globe Awards, including Best Motion Picture- Drama, Best Director and Best Performance by an Actor for Oyelowo.
One day when the glory comes
It will be ours, it will be ours
Oh, one day when the war is won
We will be sure, we will be sure
Oh, glory (glory, glory)
Oh (glory, glory)
Hands to the Heavens, no man, no weapon
Formed against, yes, glory is destined
Everyday women and men become legends
Sins that go against our skin become blessings
The movement is a rhythm to us
Freedom is like religion to us
Justice is juxtapositionin′ us
Justice for all just ain't specific enough
One son died, his spirit is revisitin′ us
Truant livin', livin' in us, resistance is us
That′s why Rosa sat on the bus
That′s why we walk through Ferguson with our hands up
When it go down we woman and man up
They say, "Stay down," and we stand up
Shots, we on the ground, the camera panned up
King pointed to the mountain top and we ran up
One day when the glory comes
It will be ours, it will be ours
Oh, one day when the war is won
We will be sure, we will be sure
Oh, glory (glory, glory)
Oh (glory, glory)
Now the war is not over, victory isn't won
And we′ll fight on to the finish, then when it's all done
We′ll cry glory, oh, glory (glory, glory)
Oh (glory, glory)
We'll cry glory, oh, glory (glory, glory)
Oh, ooh (glory, glory)
Selma′s now for every man, woman and child
Even Jesus got His crown in front of a crowd
They marched with the torch, we gon' run with it now
Never look back, we done gone hundreds of miles
From dark roads, he rose, to become a hero
Facin' the league of justice, his power was the people
Enemy is lethal, a king became regal
Saw the face of Jim Crow under a bald eagle
The biggest weapon is to stay peaceful
We sing, our music is the cuts that we bleed through
Somewhere in the dream, we had an epiphany
Now we right the wrongs in history
No one can win the war individually
It takes the wisdom of the elders and young people′s energy
Welcome to the story we call victory
The comin′ of the Lord, my eyes have seen the glory
One day when the glory comes
It will be ours, it will be ours
Oh, one day when the war is won
We will be sure, we will be sure
Oh, glory (glory, glory)
Oh (glory, glory)
Oh, glory (glory, glory)
Hey (glory, glory)
When the war is won (glory, glory), when it's all said and done (glory, glory)
We′ll cry glory (glory, glory)
Oh (glory, glory)
One day when the glory comes
It will be ours, it will be ours
Oh one day when the war is won
We will be sure, we will be sure
#189--"Don't Cry For Me, Argentina" by Madonna (from the movie Evita--1996)
Up next, a remake of a song written by famed composers Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice and originally recorded by Julie Covington, which was a big hit throughout Europe in 1976. Webber and Rice were fascinated by the story of Eva de Perón (known as Evita Perón), who began making highly emotional speeches when she became Argentina's new First Lady. Perón died at the age of 33.
Madonna recorded it for the movie Evita, which she also stars in. Joining the Material Girl are Antonio Banderas, Jonathan Pryce and Jimmy Nail.
The scene in which Madonna sings the song was filmed on the balcony of the Casa Rosada, the presidential palace in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
"Don't Cry For Me, Argentina" appears in the opening of both the first and second acts and near the end of the show as well. It was a Top 10 hit throughout the world, including #1 in Canada, France and Spain, #3 in the U.K. and #8 in the U.S. and has topped one million in worldwide sales.
Evita was nominated for five Academy Awards, including a win for Best Original Song to go with nominations for Best Cinematography and Best Sound. The Golden Globes matched that total with five nominations, with the movie capturing Best Original Song, Best Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy and Best Actress - Motion Picture Musical or Comedy for Madonna. The soundtrack was nominated for an American Music Award.
It won't be easy, you'll think it strange When I try to explain how I feel That I still need your love after all that I've done You won't believe me, all you will see is a girl you once knew Although she's dressed up to the nines At sixes and sevens with you I had to let it happen, I had to change Couldn't stay all my life down at heel
Looking out of the window, staying out of the sun So I chose freedom, running around trying everything new But nothing impressed me at all I never expected it to
Don't cry for me, Argentina The truth is, I never left you All through my wild days, my mad existence I kept my promise Don't keep your distance
And as for fortune, and as for fame I never invited them in Though it seemed to the world they were all I desired They are illusions, they're not the solutions they promised to be The answer was here all the time I love you, and hope you love me Don't cry for me, Argentina
Don't cry for me, Argentina The truth is, I never left you All through my wild days, my mad existence I kept my promise Don't keep your distance
Don't cry for me, Argentina The truth is, I never left you All through my wild days, my mad existence I kept my promise Don't keep your distance Have I said too much? There's nothing more I can think of to say to you But all you have to do is look at me to know That every word is true
#188--"Copacabana (At The Copa)" by Barry Manilow (from the movie Foul Play--1978)
Barry Manilow collaborated with Jack Feldman and Bruce
Sussman to write this second entry from the movie Foul Play in 1978. The movie was released one month after the single. Manilow got the idea for the song after being at the Copacabana Hotel in Rio de Janeiro, and upon his return, asked Feldman and Sussman to write lyrics while he wrote the music.
Lieutenant Tony Carlson and assistant "Fergie" Ferguson at first believe they are on a wild goose chase but then are in a race against time to prevent a major assassination that is about to take place in San Francisco.
Gloria Mundy (played by Goldie Hawn) is terrified and tells her story to Tony and Fergie. It seems real enough, but there are missing pieces to her story and no evidence remains of the incidents in which Mundy describes. Although there certainly is drama, Foul Play is first and foremost a comedy, and it excels at being that.
Hawn began her fabulous career on the popular Laugh-In television comedy show from 1968-70, playing goofy skits, but she has starred in a lot of good motion pictures over six decades. She won the Golden Globe and Oscar for Best Supporting Actress in Cactus Flower in 1969 and also starred in films such as Private Benjamin, There's A Girl in My Soup, Butterflies Are Free, Shampoo, Bird on a Wire, The First Wives Club and many more.
"Copacabana" wasn't the top hit for Manilow, with a peak of #2 in France, #6 in the Netherlands, #7 in Canada and #8 in the U.S., but it is one of his best-known and most enduring songs. The single has sold over one million copies.
Her name was Lola, she was a showgirl With yellow feathers in her hair and a dress cut down to there She would merengue and do the cha-cha And while she tried to be a star Tony always tended bar Across the crowded floor, they worked from eight til four They were young and they had each other Who could ask for more?
At the copa (co) Copacabana (Copacabana) The hottest spot north of Havana (here) At the copa (co) Copacabana Music and passion were always the fashion At the copa they fell in love
Copa, Copacabana His name was Rico He wore a diamond He was escorted to his chair, he saw Lola dancing there And when she finished, he called her over But Rico went a bit to far Tony sailed across the bar And then the punches flew and chairs were smashed in two There was blood and a single gun shot But just who shot who?
At the copa (co) Copacabana (Copacabana) The hottest spot north of Havana (here) At the copa (co) Copacabana Music and passion were always the fashion At the copa, she lost her love (Copa, Copacabana) (Copa, Copacabana) (Copacabana)
like in Havana (Copa, banana) Music and passion were always in fashion
Her name is Lola, she was a showgirl But that was thirty years ago, when they used to have a show Now it's a disco, but not for Lola Still in dress she used to wear Faded feathers in her hair She sits there so refined, and drinks herself half-blind She lost her youth and she lost her Tony Now she's lost her mind
At the copa (co) Copacabana (Copacabana) The hottest spot north of Havana (here) At the copa (co) Copacabana Music and passion were always in fashion At the copa don't fall in love
don't fall in love (Copacabana) (Copacabana)
#187--"What's New Pussycat?" by Tom Jones (from the movie What's New Pussycat?--1965)
The famous songwriting team of Burt Bacharach and Hal David wrote this next song as the theme for the 1965 movie What's New Pussycat? Sung by Tom Jones, it is one of 77 in the countdown by a solo male artist.
In this film, we have a womanizer by the name of Michael James (Peter O'Toole) who is engaged to be married to Carole Werner, but he just keeps being tempted by women who are attracted to him. Peter Sellers plays Dr. Fritz Fassbender, Michael's psychoanalyst.
It's a screwball comedy written by Woody Allen and starring Allen in his acting debut, along with O'Toole, Sellers, Romy Schneider, Capucine and Ursula Andress.
Bacharach wrote hundreds of songs, with 52 of them making the U.S. Top 40, including "Close To You" for the Carpenters, "Raindrops Keep Fallin' On My Head" for B.J. Thomas, "This Guy's In Love With You" for Herb Alpert, "That's What Friends Are For" for Dionne Warwick and Friends, "Arthur's Theme" with Christopher Cross, "One Less Bell To Answer" for the 5th Dimension, "What The World Needs Now Is Love" for Jackie DeShannon, 'Do You Know The Way To San Jose", "I Say A Little Prayer" and "Walk On By" for Warwick, 'The Look Of Love" and "Wishin' And Hopin' for Dusty Springfield, and many more. David was his lyrical partner for all of those except "That's What Friends Are For" and "Arthur's Theme".
"What's New Pussycat?" was nominated for an Oscar for Best Original Song. The movie grossed just $18 million.
Pussycat, Pussycat, you're delicious And if my wishes Can all come true I'll soon be kissing your sweet little pussycat lips!
Pussycat, Pussycat, I love you Yes, I do! You and your pussycat lips! (whoa) You and your pussycat eyes! (whoa) You and your pussycat nose! (whoa)
#186--"Never Enough" by Loren Allred (from
the movieThe Greatest Showman--2017)
We have already heard "A Million Dreams" in the Prelude*, and here's one of three songs from the phenomenal "The Greatest Showman" Soundtrack to make it into The Top 200*.
Written by Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, both Loren Allred singing and Rebecca Ferguson (miming the words to Allred's voice) do a fantastic job. The song appears in the movie as P.T. Barnum takes Swedish singing sensation Jenny Lind on the road. Although there is no hint of any love interest in the real story, Lind wanted more of Barnum in the movie, and so when Lind sang "Never Enough", she was really feeling the words.
Hugh Jackman gave a startling performance as Barnum, with Zac Efron as his sidekick and eventual partner Philip Carlyle, Michelle Williams as Barnum's wife Charity, Zendaya as the acrobat and trapeze artist and Philip's love interest, Anne Wheeler, Keala Settle as Lettie Lutz ("the bearded lady), and Sam Humphrey as the dwarf performer known as "General Tom Thumb" lend support.
Although Jackman surprised us with his singing talent, we should have expected it, as Hugh has been as at home with a romantic comedy such as Kate and Leopold, a horror film such as Van Helsing, a drama such as The Prestige and science fiction thrillers such as his breakthrough as Wolverine in the X-Men series.
Efron rose to fame for starring in the High School Musical series. In addition to The Greatest Showman, Efron has starred in several other movies including New Year's Eve--he also has a fantastic part in the great independent film Liberal Arts--check that out!
Although neither the United States (#88) nor the United Kingdom (#24) saw fit to rank the song in their Top 10, "Never Enough" has sold over 3 million copies--2 million in the U.S. and 1 million in the U.K., many more than most songs ranked way ahead of it.
I'm trying to hold my breath Let it stay this way Can't let this moment end You set off a dream in me Getting louder now Can you hear it echoing? Take my hand Will you share this with me? 'Cause darling, without you
All the shine of a thousand spotlights All the stars we steal from the night sky Will never be enough Never be enough Towers of gold are still too little These hands could hold the world but it'll Never be enough Never be enough
For me Never, never Never, never Never, for me For me Never enough Never enough Never enough For me For me For me
All the shine of a thousand spotlights All the stars we steal from the night sky Will never be enough Never be enough Towers of gold are still too little These hands could hold the world but it'll Never be enough Never be enough
For me Never, never Never, never Never, for me For me Never enough Never, never Never enough Never, never Never enough For me For me For me
For me
#185--"A Thousand Years" by Kristina Perry (from the movie The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 1--2011)
Kristina Perry co-wrote "A Thousand Years" with her producer David Hodges, as well as sang this next great song for the movie The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 1 in 2011. It's a song about the love affair between Edward and Bella. This was the fourth movie of the series, with Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner reprising their roles as Bella Swan, Edward Cullen and Jacob Black, respectively. Breaking Dawn - Part 1 grossed $712 million worldwide.
Kristina taught herself how to play guitar when she was 16. While she was waiting for her big break, she produced music videos and worked as a waitress at the Melrose Cafe in Los Angeles. Perry's older brother Nick played in the group Shinedown.
One of 29 songs since 2000 to make the list, "A Thousand Years" reached the Top 10 in several countries, including #9 in Scotland, and hit #11 in both the United States (on the Adult Contemporary chart) and United Kingdom. Despite it's absurd peak of #31 in Billboard, the song's appeal and longevity are evidenced by a sensational 10 million copies sold in the U.S. alone. Perry later re-recorded the song with Steve Kazee for the sequel in 2012.
Heart beats fast Colors and promises How to be brave? How can I love when I'm afraid to fall? But watching you stand alone All of my doubt suddenly goes away somehow
One step closer
I have died every day waiting for you Darling, don't be afraid I have loved you for a thousand years I'll love you for a thousand more
Time stands still Beauty in all she is I will be brave I will not let anything take away What's standing in front of me Every breath, every hour has come to this
One step closer
I have died every day waiting for you Darling, don't be afraid I have loved you for a thousand years I'll love you for a thousand more
And all along I believed I would find you Time has brought your heart to me I have loved you for a thousand years I'll love you for a thousand more
One step closer One step closer
I have died every day waiting for you Darling, don't be afraid I have loved you for a thousand years I'll love you for a thousand more
And all along I believed I would find you Time has brought your heart to me I have loved you for a thousand years I'll love you for a thousand more
#184--"Out Here On My Own" by Irene Cara (from the movie Fame--1980)
Song #184* comes from the 1980 musical Fame, written by Lesley Gore and Michael Gore. Cara acted for 10 years before her breakthrough performance as Coco Hernandez, with the movie also starring Eddie Barth, Lee Curreri and Laura Dean.
Fame, which was partially inspired by the musical A Chorus Line, is producer David De Silva's chronicle of the lives and tribulations of students at The High School of Performing Arts. Cara loved the song and her performance, because her voice was constantly being compared to Donna Summer, and she felt that on this ballad, it sounded like her and not like Summer.
Cara begin her career singing and dancing on Spanish-language television, then as a regular performer on the PBS show The Electric Company. Her performances in dramatic projects such as Roots: The Next Generations and Guyana Tragedy: The Story of Jim Jones won her critical acclaim.
"Out Here On My Own" was nominated for Best Original Song
at the Academy Awards, proof that despite Billboard's ranking of #19, it is one of The Top Unknown/Underrated Songs of the Rock Era*.
Fame was nominated for five Oscars, including for this song and another one coming up, as well as Best Writing, Screenplay Written Directly for the Screen, Best Sound and Best Film Editing. The movie was nominated for Best Motion Picture - Comedy or Musical and Best Original Score - Motion Picture at the Golden Globes, while Cara received a Best Actress in a Motion Picture - Comedy or Musical.
Sometimes I wonder where I've been, Who I am, Do I fit in. Make believein' is hard alone, Out here on my own.
We're always provin' who we are, Always reachin' For that risin' star To guide me far And shine me home, Out here on my own.
When I'm down and feelin' blue, I close my eyes so I can be with you. Oh, baby be strong for me; Baby belong to me. Help me through. Help me need you.
Until the morning sun appears Making light Of all my fears, I dry the tears I've never shown, Out here on my own.
But when I'm down and feelin' blue, I close my eyes so I can be with you. Oh, baby be strong for me; Baby, belong to me. Help me through. Help me need you.
Sometimes I wonder where I've been, Who I am, Do I fit in. I may not win, But I can't be thrown, Out here on my own,
#183--"I'm Alive" by Celine Dion (from the movie Stuart Little 2--2002)
Written by Kristian Lundin and Andreas Carlsson, Celine Dion brought this song to life in the 2002 movie Stuart Little 2.
Stuart Little 2 is the live-action and animated comedy sequel to Stuart Little starring Geena Davis, Hugh Laurie and Jonathan Lipnicki with the voices of Michael J. Fox as Stuart Little and Nathan Lane as Snowbell. In this movie, Stuart has been adopted by the Littles and has trouble adapting to his new family.
Lane has branched off into many different areas and has excelled at everything he's done. Nathan began his career in an off-Broadway production of A Midsummer Night's Dream. In his career, Nathan has won three Tony Awards and three Emmys. In 2008, Lane was inducted into the American Theater Hall of Fame and in 2010, The New York Times praised Lane as "the greatest stage entertainer of the decade."
Consider Lane's resume: A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, The Producers and Angels in America, all with Tony Awards, Guys and Dolls, The Nance, The Front Page, The Odd Couple, The Lion King, The Birdcage, Only Murders in the Building and Modern Family from 2010 to 2019, for which he received three Primetime Emmy Award nominations.

I get wings to fly Oh, oh, I'm alive
When you call on me When I hear you breathe I get wings to fly I feel that I'm alive
When you look at me I can touch the sky I know that I'm alive
When you bless the day I just drift away All my worries die I'm glad that I'm alive
You've set my heart on fire Filled me with love Made me a woman on clouds above
I couldn't get much higher My spirit takes flight 'Cause I am alive
When you call on me When you call on me When I hear you breathe When I hear you breathe I get wings to fly I feel that I'm alive I am alive
When you reach for me When you reach for me Raising spirits high God knows that That I'll be the one Standing by through good and through trying times And it's only begun I can't wait for the rest of my life
When you call on me When you call on me When you reach for me When you reach for me I get wings to fly I feel that
When you bless the day When you bless, you bless the day I just drift away I just drift away All my worries die I know that I'm alive I get wings to fly God knows that I'm alive
#182-"Where Are You Christmas?" by Faith Hill (from the movie The Grinch Who Stole Christmas--2000)
Mariah Carey, James Horner and Will Jennings wrote this great song for the 2000 Ron Howard movie How the Grinch Stole Christmas, featuring a superb performance from Jim Carrey. Mariah recorded the song originally but due to a lengthy legal battle with ex-husband Tommy Mottola, she could not release it, so Faith Hill recorded her version for the movie.
The movie, based on Dr. Seuss's 1957 children's book of the same name, is narrated by Anthony Hopkins and with a box office total of $347 million was the sixth-highest grossing movie of the year. The movie follows the Grinch from childhood, through school and finally when he fled Whoville for Mount Crumpit, where he built an elaborate lair high above the Who's. But six-year-old Cindy Lou Who, who is dismayed by the materialism of her town's Christmas, encounters the Grinch at the Whoville post office and is convinced that he is not as bad as the other townspeople say he is. Cindy sets out on a mission to make the Grinch the Holiday Cheermaster.
Although Cindy' succeeds in that quest, the experience doesn't go well, causing the Grinch to go on a rampage of vandalism and antics before returning to Mount Crumpit. When he discovers that the town still plans to celebrate Christmas, the Grinch travels down the mountain to steal all the Whos presents, decorations and food before they wake on Christmas morning.
But when the Whos wake up, they gather together in the town center to sing Christmas carols. The Grinch is puzzled at this reaction, and in that moment realizes the true meaning of Christmas. His heart famously grows three sizes, at which point he boards his sleigh again and heads back to Whoville to apologize and return the stolen items. The Grinch is accepted by the town and he invites the Whos to celebrate Christmas in his cave, where he carves the Roast Beast for the feast.
"Where Are You Christmas?" is one of The Top 150 Christmas Songs of the Rock Era*. Although it mysteriously stalled at #10 on the U.S. Adult Contemporary chart, it ranked seventh all-time in SoundScan's 2016 list of best-selling digital Christmas singles with over 1 million downloads. Hill's song appears in the movie as the ending credits are shown on the screen.
Carrey was nominated for Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture - Comedy or Musical at the Golden Globe Awards. The Grinch Who Stole Christmas won Academy Awards for Best Makeup and Best Costume Design while Carrey captured Favorite Actor - Comedy at the Blockbuster Entertainment Awards.
Where are you, Christmas? Why can't I find you? Why have you gone away? Where is the laughter You used to bring me? Why can't I hear music play?
My world is changing I'm rearranging Does that mean Christmas changes too?
Where are you, Christmas? Do you remember The one you used to know? I'm not the same one See what the time's done Is that why you have let me go?
Christmas is here Everywhere, oh Christmas is here If you care, oh-oh-oh If there is love in your heart and your mind You will feel like Christmas all the time, oh
I feel you Christmas I know I've found you You never fade away, oh The joy of Christmas Stays here inside us Fills each and every heart With love
Where are you, Christmas? Fill your heart with love

So love me like you do, la-la-love me like you do Love me like you do, la-la-love me like you do Touch me like you do, ta-ta-touch me like you do What are you waiting for?
Fading in, fading out On the edge of paradise Every inch of your skin is a Holy Grail I've got to find Only you can set my heart on fire, on fire
Yeah, I'll let you set the pace 'Cause I'm not thinking straight My head's spinning around, I can't see clear no more What are you waiting for?

Love me like you do, la-la-love me like you do (like you do) Love me like you do, la-la-love me like you do (whoa) Touch me like you do, ta-ta-touch me like you do (ah) What are you waiting for?
We hope you've enjoyed this second segment as Inside The Rock Era goes to the flicks--tune in again tomorrow!
