The Top Movie Songs of the Rock Era, Part Fifteen (#60-51)

We're celebrating movie music of the Rock Era!  We're glad you found this--make sure you listen to the two Preludes* and all 14 segments before this one.  On with the countdown!

#60--"Born To Be Wild" by Steppenwolf (from the movie Easy Rider--1968)

Canadian musician and songwriter Mars Bonfire (real name Dennis Edmonton) wrote this for Steppenwolf in 1968, and the song was the background for the opening of the movie Easy Rider.  Bonfire was in the group the Sparrows, the band in which Steppenwolf was based on, and his brother was Steppenwolf's drummer.

Peter Fonda and Dennis Hopper star as two motorcyclists who smuggled cocaine from Mexico and sell it in the all-too-vulnerable U.S. and are now traveling in the American South and Southwest.  Jack Nicholson plays the lawyer who eventually helps the pair get out of jail and decides to travel with them to New Orleans.  Karen Black and Toni Basil of "Mickey" fame co-star.

Nicholson is one of the most-celebrated actors of all-time; he is tied with Katharine Hepburn for 2nd for the most Oscar nominations with 12.  He may have first become known in Easy Rider (he appeared in 19 movies before that one), but he went on a serious roll afterward.

Nicholson starred in Five Easy Pieces the following year, Carnal Knowledge the year after that and The King of Marvin Gardens in 1972.  He then proceeded to star in The Last Detail, Chinatown, Tommy, The Fortune, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, The Last Tycoon, Goin' South, The Shining, The Postman Always Rings Twice, Reds, Terms of Endearment, Prizzi's Honor, Heartburn, The Witches of Eastwick, Broadcast News, Batman, A Few Good Men, Hoffa and As Good As It Gets.  That's quite an amazing 28-year run.

Since 1997, Nicholson has starred in Something's Gotta' Give and The Bucket List among eight films.

Nicholson has now appeared in 80 films and has come home with six Golden Globe Awards and three Oscars.

Steppenwolf formed in 1967 and exploded in 1968 with the release of "Born To Be Wild".  The group also hit with "Magic Carpet Ride" and "Rock Me".

One of four songs in our special from 1968, "Born To Be Wild" hit #2, kept out of the top spot by the classic Rascals hit "People Got To Be Free" in the United States and #1 in Canada.  It sold over one million units in the U.S. and is now over two million worldwide.

Easy Rider took in a gross of $60 million.  Although he wasn't the star of the film, Nicholson pretty much launched his amazing career with this film, nominated for Best Supporting Actor--the movie also picked up a nomination for Best Original Screenplay.

#59--"Hopelessly Devoted To You" by Olivia Newton-John (from the movie Grease--1978)

John Farrar, producer for Olivia Newton-John, wrote this for Olivia for the blockbuster movie Grease.  It's one of 11 songs in our salute from the year 1978.

Grease was the follow-up to Saturday Night Fever for John Travolta, as he was one of the hottest stars in the world, and for producer Robert Stigwood as well.  Travolta and Newton-John were magical together and were lifelong friends until Olivia's death.

The movie is based on the 1972 stage musical of the same name.  Greaser Danny Zuko (Travolta) has an image to live up to at Rydell High School, but he's met his match when he hooks up with Sandy Olsson (Newton-John), a transfer student from Australia.  Stockard Channing as Betty Rizzo, Didi Conn as Frenchy Facciano , Sid Caesar as Coach Calhoun and Dody Goodman as Blanch Hodel co-star.  Frankie Avalon appears briefly as Teen Angel.

Farrar was a member of several bands in the 60's and 70's, most notably the Shadows.  A friend of Olivia Newton-John (Farrar married Olivia's best friend Pat Carroll in 1969), Farrar wrote and produced for Olivia from 1971-1989.  Among the songs he wrote for Newton-John were "Have You Never Been Mellow", "You're The One That I Want", "Hopelessly Devoted To You" and "Magic".

John and Pat's son is Sam Farrar, bassist of Maroon 5.

Channing is also known for playing First Lady Abbey Bartlet on the popular television series The West Wing from 1999-2006.  Stockard was nominated for Best Actress for the movie Six Degrees of Separation.  She also starred in The Fortune, Heartburn, the great movies Without a Trace, The First Wives Club and Life or Something Like It and Up Close and Personal.

The million-selling "Hopelessly Devoted To You" hit #1 in Canada, Ireland, the Netherlands and Belgium, #2 in the U.K. and Australia and #3 in the U.S. and was nominated for a Golden Globe Award and an Oscar for Best Original Song.  The single has sold over one million copies in the U.S. alone.

The "Grease" Soundtrack is not far behind Saturday Night Fever--it has sold over 30 million globally, 17 million in the United States.  It was a #1 album in every major country in the world and finished 1978 as the second-best-selling album of the year to Saturday Night Fever.  The soundtrack won an American Music Award as Favorite Pop/Rock Album.

Grease was honored with five Golden Globe Awards, including Best Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy, Best Actor for Travolta and Best Actress for Newton-John and won People's Choice Awards for Favorite Overall Motion Picture and Favorite Musical Motion Picture.  The film raked in a gross of $356 million.  In 2020, the United States Library of Congress selected the movie for preservation in the country's National Film Registry.

Guess mine is not the first heart brokenMy eyes are not the first to cryI'm not the first to knowThere's just no getting over you
I know I'm just a fool who's willingTo sit around and wait for youBut baby, can't you see there's nothing else for me to do?I'm hopelessly devoted to you
But now there's nowhere to hideSince you pushed my love asideI'm out of my headHopelessly devoted to you
Hopelessly devoted to youHopelessly devoted to you
My head is sayin', "Fool, forget him"My heart is sayin', "Don't let goHold on to the end", that's what I intend to doI'm hopelessly devoted to you
But now there's no way to hideSince you pushed my love asideI'm outta' my headHopelessly devoted to you
Hopelessly devoted to youHopelessly devoted to you

#58--"It Must Have Been Love" by Roxette (from the movie Pretty Woman--1990)

Per Gessle of Roxette wrote this for the duo's recording of "It Must Have Been Love" to be included in the 1990 movie Pretty Woman.  It is featured prominently in the closing scene and credits.

The movie from director Garry Marshall stars Richard Gere as millionaire businessman Edward Lewis who buys up companies and then destroys them, selling only the valuable pieces.  On a whim one night while driving lawyer Philip's Lotus, he picks up prostitute Vivian Ward, played by Julia Roberts, for the night.  Vivian agrees  to be his escort for several upcoming business and social functions.  During that time, the pair become attracted to each other and Lewis is left with a dilemma.

Gere had already shown himself to be an outstanding actor for the 1981 movie An Officer and a Gentleman, but Roberts, who had played in several minor films previously, became a superstar as a result of this film.  Hector Elizondo plays the delightfully-charming manager of the hotel where Lewis and Ward stay, while Jason Alexander and Laura San Giacomo co-star with Ralph Bellamy in his final performance.

Roberts was coming off roles in Mystic Pizza and Steel Magnolias, and parlayed her success in Pretty Woman to star in the thriller Sleeping with the Enemy, the all-time classic The Pelican Brief (in which she should have won the Oscar for Best Actress), My Best Friend's Wedding and Runaway Bride, which reunited her with Gere.  Julia finally won that  Oscar for Best Actress in Erin Brockovich in 2000, and then starred in Oceans Eleven, Oceans Twelve and the great movies Charlie Wilson's War and Eat Pray Love.

Roberts is one of the highest-grossing actresses of all-time, with her films grossing $3.9 billion worldwide.

The single has sold over one million copies worldwide and hit the Top 10 in nearly every major country (#1 in the United States, Australia, Canada, Switzerland, Norway and Spain).

The soundtrack went to #1 in Germany, Australia, Austria, and #2 in the U.K., New Zealand, Norway and Switzerland and #4 in the United States.  It has sold over 3 million in the U.S. and over 7 million globally.

Pretty Woman dazzled audiences to the tune of $460 million at the box office to become the highest-grossing romantic comedy of all-time and fifth biggest movie ever at the time.  It was nominated for four Golden Globes--Best Motion Picture - Comedy or Musical, Best Actor for Gere and Best Actress for Roberts and Best Supporting Actor for Elizondo while Roberts was nominated for Best Actress at the Academy Awards.

It must have been loveBut it's over now
Lay a whisper on my pillowLeave the winter on the groundI wake up lonely, there's air of silenceIn the bedroom and all around
Touch me now, I close my eyesAnd dream away
It must have been loveBut it's over nowIt must have been goodBut I lost it somehow
It must have been loveBut it's over nowFrom the moment we touched'Til the time had run out
Make-believing we're togetherThat I'm sheltered by your heartBut in and outside I've turned to waterLike a teardrop in your palm
And it's a hard winter's dayI dream away
It must have been love (must have been love)But it's over now (but it's over now)It was all that I wantedNow I'm living without
It must have been love (it must have been love)But it's over nowIt's where the water flowsIt's where the wind blows
It must have been love (must have been love)But it's over now (but it's over now)It must have been goodBut I lost it somehow
It must have been love (must have been love)But it's over now (but it's over now)From the moment we touched'Til the time had run out
Yeah, it must have been love (must have been love)But it's over now (but it's over now)It was all that I wantedNow I'm living without
It must have been loveBut it's over nowIt's where the water flowsIt's where the wind blows
Oh-oh (must have been love)But it's over now (but it's over now), nowIt must have been love (it must have been love)But it's over now (but it's over now), now

#57--"A Whole New World (Aladdin's Theme)" by Peabo Bryson & Regina Belle (from the movie Aladdin--1992)

Tim Rice wrote this one with composer Alan Menken as the theme song for Aladdin and Jasmine, sung by Brad Kane and Lea Salonga, respectively, in the 1992 animated blockbuster Aladdin.  Scott Weinger and Linda Larkin provide the voices for Aladdin and Jasmine.  The single version by Peabo Bryson & Regina Belle plays over the ending credits and is titled on the soundtrack as "Aladdin's Theme".

In Aladdin, Jafar is the royal vizier of the city of Agrabah in the Middle East who wants to find a magic lamp that is hidden within the Cave of Wonders.  Princess Jasmine escapes from her life in the palace and comes across Aladdin.  The two form a bond, but Jafar has Aladdin kidnapped and orders Aladdin to go look for the magic lamp.

Aladdin finds the lamp as well as a genie (voiced by Robin Williams), who helps him disguise himself as a wealthy prince so he can return to Agrabah to win the love of Jasmine.

Rice partnered with Andrew Lloyd Webber to write songs for Jesus Christ Superstar and Evita, among others.  Tim joined Bjorn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson of ABBA to write Chess, then teamed up with Elton John for The Lion King, Aida and The Road to El Dorado and also wrote lyrics for Beauty and the Beast.  Rice was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1999 and is one of 21 artists to have won an Oscar, a Grammy, a Tony and an Emmy.

Bryson has joined with Roberta Flack for  "Tonight, I Celebrate My Love", with Regina Belle for "A Whole New World" and with Celine Dion for "Beauty And The Beast" and had a solo hit with "If Ever You're In My Arms Again".

"A Whole New World" picked up an Oscar and a Golden Globe for Best Original Song as well as Grammys for Song of the Year, Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals and Best Song Written Specifically for a Motion Picture or for Television.

The single was a double #1 in the U.S. (Adult Contemporary as well as Popular) and #6 in Canada and was certified Gold.

The soundtrack album reached #6 in the U.S., where it sold 3 million copies.

Aladdin was a monster hit that grossed $504 million.  It earned a Golden Globe nomination for Best Motion Picture - Comedy or Musical and  won an Academy Award for Best Original Score and was nominated for Best Sound and Best Sound Effects Editing.

I can show you the world
Shining, shimmering, splendid
Tell me, princess, now when did
You last let your heart decide?
I can open your eyes
Take you wonder by wonder
Over, sideways and under
On a magic carpet ride

A whole new world
A new fantastic point of view
No one to tell us, "no"
Or where to go
Or say we're only dreaming

A whole new world
A dazzling place I never knew
But when I'm way up here
It's crystal clear
That now I'm in a whole new world with you
(Now I'm in a whole new world with you)

Unbelievable sights
Indescribable feeling
Soaring, tumbling, freewheeling
Through an endless diamond sky

A whole new world
(Don't you dare close your eyes)
A hundred thousand things to see
(Hold your breath, it gets better)
I'm like a shooting star
I've come so far
I can't go back to where I used to be

A whole new world
(Every turn, a surprise)
With new horizons to pursue
(Every moment, red-letter)
I'll chase them anywhere
There's time to spare
Let me share this whole new world with you

A whole new world
(A whole new world)
That's where we'll be
(That's where we'll be)
A thrilling chase
(A wondrous place)
For you and me

Love on the rocks, ain't no surpriseJust pour me a drink, and I'll tell you some liesGot nothing to lose, so you just sing the bluesAll the time
Gave you my heart, gave you my soulYou left me alone here with nothing to holdYesterday's gone, now all I want is a smile
At first they say they want you, hear how they really need youSuddenly you find you're out there walking in a stormAnd when they know they have you, then they really have youNothing you can do or say, you've got to leave, just get awayWe all know the song
You need what you need, you can say what you wantNot much you can do when the feeling is goneMaybe blue skies above, but it's coolWhen your love's on the rocks
At first they say they want you, hear how they really need youSuddenly you find you're out there walking in a stormAnd when they know they have you, then they really have youNothing you can do or say, you've got to leave, just get awayWe all know the song

Love on the rocks, ain't no big surpriseJust pour me a drink, and I'll tell you more liesYesterday's gone and now all I want is a smile

When it's love you give
I'll be a man of good faith
then in love you live.
I'll make a stand. I won't break
I'll be the rock you can build on,
be there when you're old,
to have and to hold.

When there's love inside
I swear I'll always be strong
then there's a reason why.
I'll prove to you we belong
I'll be the wall that protects you
from the wind and the rain,
from the hurt and pain.

Let's make it all for one and all for love.
Let the one you hold be the one you want,
The one you need,
Cause when it's all for one it's one for all.
When there's someone that should know
Then just let your feelings show
And make it all for one and all for love.

When it's love you make
I'll be the fire in your night.
When it's love you take.
I will defend, I will fight
I'll be there when you need me.
When honor's at stake,
This vow I will make

That it's all for one and all for love.
Let the one you hold be the one you want,
The one you need.
Cause when it's all for one it's one for all.
When there's someone that should know
Then just let your feelings show
And make it all for one and all for love.

Don't lay our love to rest
Cause we can stand up to the test.
We got everything, that and more
Then we had planned,
More than the rivers that run the land.
We've got it all, in our hands.

Now it's all for one and all for love.
Let the one you hold be the one you want
The one you need,
Cause when it's all for one it's one for all.
When there's someone that should know
then just let your feelings show.
When there's someone that you want,
when there's someone that you need
Let's make it all, all for one and all for love.

#54--"Shallow" by Lady Gaga & Bradley Cooper (from the movie A Star Is Born--2018)

Lady Gaga co-wrote Song #54* with Andrew Wyatt, Anthony Rossomando and Mark Ronson for the 2018 remake of A Star Is Born.  Gaga recorded it with actor and co-star Bradley Cooper, who also produced and directed the film.  The song is heard three times in the movie, most prominently during a performance by Jackson Maine (played by Cooper) when he invites Ally (played by Gaga) to perform onstage.  The scene was filmed before a live audience at the Greek Theater in Los Angeles.

Cooper plays an over-the-hill alcoholic musician named Jackson Maine who meets a young singer named Ally played by Gaga.  As they talk, Ally shares the lyrics to a song she's been writing and Jack is impressed.  At his next concert, Jack invites Ally to sing the song "Shallow" on stage with him.  It goes over well with the audience, and Jack invites Ally to go on tour and they become romantically involved as well.

Ally's popularity continues to grow while Jack's sinks and although he loves her, he can't help but feel jealous and must deal with his emotions and his drinking problem.

Sam Elliott is great as Bobby Maine, Jack's brother and manager, while Andrew Dice Clay and Dave Chappelle co-star.

Cooper scored his breakthrough in 2009 in The Hangover.  He earned his first Golden Globe and Oscar nominations for Best Actor in Silver Linings Playbook and followed that up with  nominations for Best Supporting Actor for American Hustle.  Bradley was outstanding in The American Sniper, a movie he also produced, that scored nominations for Best Picture and Best Actor.  As a producer, Cooper earned nominations for Joker, Nightmare Alley and Maestro, earning another Best Actor nomination for the latter.  Bradley has been nominated for 12 Academy Awards, 6 Golden Globes, 3 Grammys and an Emmy.

Elliott has appeared in several great movies in his five decades of work, including Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, Mask, Conagher, the outstanding Tombstone in 1993, We Were Soldiers and Ghost Rider

Elliott's deep, resonating voice is used often for commercials, most notably for the American Beef Council.

"Shallow" has sold over 4 million units in the United States alone and a whopping 14 million worldwide.  It won Best Original Song at both the Oscars and the Golden Globes and Grammy Awards for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance and Best Song Written for Visual Media and was nominated for both Record of the Year and Song of the Year.

The soundtrack was a Top 10 smash across the world, reaching #1 in the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, France, New Zealand, Norway, Ireland, Denmark and Switzerland.  It sold over two million units in the U.S. and over six million globally and picked up Best Compilation Soundtrack for Visual Media awards at the Grammys and was nominated for Favorite Soundtrack at the American Music Awards.

The 2018 version of A Star Is Born grossed $436 million.  The film picked up Golden Globe nominations for Best Motion Picture - Drama, Best Director and Best Actor and Actress for Cooper and Gaga and also was nominated for eight Academy Awards including Best Picture, Best Actor and Actress for Cooper and Gaga, Best Supporting Actor for Elliott, Best Cinematography, Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Achievement in Sound Mixing.

Tell me something, girlAre you happy in this modern world?Or do you need more?Is there something else you're searchin' for?
I'm fallingIn all the good times, I find myself longin' for changeAnd in the bad times, I fear myself
Tell me something, boyAren't you tired trying to fill that void?Or do you need more?Ain't it hard keeping it so hardcore?
I'm fallingIn all the good times, I find myself longing for changeAnd in the bad times, I fear myself
I'm off the deep end, watch as I dive inI'll never meet the groundCrash through the surface, where they can't hurt usWe're far from the shallow now
In the sha-ha, sha-ha-llowIn the sha-ha-sha-la-la-la-llowIn the sha-ha, sha-ha-llowWe're far from the shallow now
Oh, ha-ah-ahAh, ha-ah-ah, oh, ahHa-ah-ah-ah
I'm off the deep end, watch as I dive inI'll never meet the groundCrash through the surface, where they can't hurt usWe're far from the shallow now
In the sha-ha, sha-ha-llowIn the sha-ha-sha-la-la-la-llowIn the sha-ha, sha-ha-llowWe're far from the shallow now

#53--"Let's Hear It For The Boy" by Deniece Williams (from the movie Footloose--1984)

Dean Pitchford and Tom Snow wrote our next movie smash for the colossal 1984 film Footloose and Deniece Williams recorded it on Columbia Records.  The song appears in the movie as Ren McCormack (Kevin Bacon) is trying to teach the clumsy Willard (Chris Penn) how to dance and shows how much Penn has learned.

Footloose is one of the best movies with music of the Rock Era.  It is the story of Ren moving to a small town in Utah with his single mother and experiencing a good deal of culture shock.  The townspeople (even his fellow students) aren't too warm towards him at first, but he gradually makes friends.

The thing to watch is the growth of the Reverend Shaw Moore, played expertly by John Lithgow.  Though he is a traditional minister, he only wants what is best for his congregation as well as his daughter and you can clearly see in Lithgow's performance that he has the best intentions.  He clashes with his daughter Ariel (Lori Singer), who has a tendency to be wild (what father wouldn't with a daughter like that?), but his wife (played by Dianne Wiest) to her credit stands her ground and you can see Reverend Moore slowly beginning to change and be more accepting of new ideas.  That part of the movie is really a work of art.

Sarah Jessica Parker is Rusty (Willard's love interest) in the movie.

Lithgow studied at Harvard University and the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art to prepare him for his acting career.

Lithgow has won two Golden Globes, four Grammy Awards, two Tony Awards and six Primetime Emmys.  He picked up his first Tony for The Changing Room in 1972 and a second for The Sweet Smell of Success.  John was also nominated at the Tonys for his performances in Requiem for a Heavyweight in 1985, M Butterfly in 1988 and Dirty Rotten Scoundrels in 2005.

John was nominated for Oscars for Best Supporting Actor in The World According to Garp and for Terms of Endearment.  He has also starred in All That Jazz, Blow Out, the great movie 2010A Civil Action, Shrek, Rise of the Planet of the Apes, Interstellar and Conclave.

Lithgow is also known for his role in 3rd Rock from the Sun, for which he won three Primetime Emmys  for Best Actor in a Comedy Series.  John was also outstanding in the series The Crown as British Prime Minister Winston Churchill, nominated for another Primetime Emmy.

"Let's Hear It For The Boy" went #1 Popular and R&B in the U.S. and #2 in the U.K. and also hit #1 in Canada.  It was nominated for Best Original Song at the Academy Awards.  The single has topped 1 million in sales.

The "Footloose" Soundtrack was nominated for Best Album of Original Score Written for a Motion Picture or Television Special at the Grammy Awards.

Footloose grossed $80 million in 1984 and its popularity has done nothing but grow since then.

#52--"Magic" by Olivia Newton-John (from the movie Xanadu--1980)

Olivia Newton-John's producer, John Farrar, wrote this member of The Top 500 Songs of the Rock Era* club--"Magic"-- from the 1980 movie Xanadu, which stars Gene Kelly in his final film, Newton-John and Michael Beck.

Xanadu is the story of Sonny Malone (Kelly), a struggling artist in Los Angeles who doesn't have the feeling towards his craft that he should.  After a particularly disappointing drawing session, Malone throws up one of his sketches.  It hits the wind and drifts to a mural of nine sisters in the town that suddenly comes to life.  The sisters fly across the Earth, but one of them roller skates to Sonny and kisses him before skating away.

Sonny tracks down the woman in front of the auditorium where he first saw her and finds out her name is Kira.  Meanwhile, he and former big-band clarinet player Danny McGuire (Beck) meet and become partners in a nightclub at the site of the auditorium that they name Xanadu.  Danny tells about his romance with a singer in the 1940's who looked a lot like Kira.

Sonny and Kira fall in love, but on the night before the club is set to open, Kira reveals that she is Terpsichore, one of the Nine Muses of Olympus, that she was sent to inspire Xanadu, and now must leave Earth.

Kelly may very well be the best (and probably the most-loved) dancer on the big screen.  He invented many of his own moves, and always did it with a big smile.  Gene dazzled us with great films such as An American in Paris, Singin' in the Rain, Anchors Aweigh (for which he was nominated for Best Actor), On the Town and Inherit the Wind.

Kelly directed Hello, Dolly! in 1969 and co-hosted and appeared in all three of the That's Entertainment features.  According to dance and art historian Beth Genné, "Kelly...fundamentally affected the way movies are made and the way we look at them.  And he did it with a dancer's eye and from a dancer's perspective."

Gene won the Cecil B. DeMille Award at the Golden Globes, Kennedy Center Honors and Life Achievement Awards from the Screen Actors Guild and the American Film Institute.

"Magic" led the way in the United States for four weeks (also #1 for five weeks on the Adult Contemporary chart) and two weeks in Canada.  That stay at the top would have been longer if not for Christopher Cross's "Sailing" in a very competitive time in music.

The "Xanadu" Soundtrack did far better than the movie, cruising to #1 in Germany, Australia, Austria, Israel, Norway, Spain, Sweden and the Netherlands, #2 in the U.K. and #4 in the U.S.  It has sold over two million copies in the U.S. and is now over five million worldwide.

Director Robert Greenwald had high hopes for the movie with the star power of Kelly and Newton-John but its script was weak and it only grossed $23 million.

Come take my handYou should know meI've always been in your mindYou know I will be kindI'll be guiding you
Building your dream has to start nowThere's no other road to takeYou won't make a mistakeI'll be guiding you
You have to believe we are magicNothin' can stand in our wayYou have to believe we are magicDon't let your aim ever strayAnd if all your hopes survive, destiny will arriveI'll bring all your dreams alive for youI'll bring all your dreams alive for you
From where I stand, you are home freeThe planets align, so rareThere's promise in the airAnd I'm guiding you
Through every turn, I'll be near youI'll come anytime you callI'll catch you when you fallI'll be guiding you
You have to believe we are magicNothin' can stand in our wayYou have to believe we are magicDon't let your aim ever strayAnd if all your hopes survive, destiny will arriveI'll bring all your dreams alive for youI'll bring all your dreams alive for you
You have to believe we are magicNothin' can stand in our wayYou have to believe we are magicDon't let your aim ever strayAnd if all your hopes survive, destiny will arriveI'll bring all your dreams alive for youI'll bring all your dreams alive for you

#51--"Crazy For You" by Madonna (from the movie Vision Quest--1985)

Jon Lind and John Bettis wrote this for Madonna for the movie Vision Quest, one of 10 cinema songs from the year 1985 to make this countdown.  The song plays during a scene in which Matthew Modine and Linda Fiorentino dance for the first time.  At first, Lind and Bettis didn't like Madonna's first recordings of the song, but with Rob Mounsey's help, it was done to the songwriters' liking.

Vision Quest is based on the 1979 novel by Terry Davis with Modine playing a high school wrestler named Louden Swain in Spokane, Washington who falls for an older woman (Carla, played by Fiorentino), an up-and-coming artist from New Jersey on her way to San Francisco.  Madonna makes her motion picture debut as a singer at a local bar and Forest Whitaker co-stars.

Bettis worked with Richard Carpenter to write many of the Carpenters' big hits, including "Top Of The World", "Yesterday Once More", "Only Yesterday" and "Goodbye To Love".  He also wrote "Slow Hand" for the Pointer Sisters, "One Moment In Time" for Whitney Houston, "Human Nature" for Michael Jackson and "Like No Other Night" for 38 Special.  John has written for many artists including Barbra Streisand, Donna Summer, Diana Ross, Eric Clapton and Juice Newton.

Bettis has written 1,160 songs and is a member of the Songwriters Hall of Fame.  He has won two Emmy Awards from four nominations.

"Crazy For You" has sold over 2 million copies in the United States alone.  It zoomed to #1 in the U.S., the United Kingdom, Canada and Australia.

You recall Journey earlier in the special with "Only The Young" from the same movie.  The soundtrack album stalled at #11, but did sell over one million copies.

Vision Quest grossed just $13 million.

Swaying room as the music startsStrangers making the most of the darkTwo by two, their bodies become one
I see you through the smokey airCan't you feel the weight of my stare? You're so close but still a world awayWhat I'm dying to say, is that
I'm crazy for youTouch me once and you'll know it's trueI never wanted anyone like thisIt's all brand newYou'll feel it in my kissI'm crazy for youCrazy for you
Trying hard to control my heartI walk over to where you areEye to eye, we need no words at all
Slowly now we begin to moveEvery breath I'm deeper into youSoon we two are standing still in timeIf you read my mind, you'll see
I'm crazy for youTouch me once and you'll know it's trueI never wanted anyone like thisIt's all brand newYou'll feel it in my kissYou'll feel it in my kissBecause I'm crazy for youTouch me once and you'll know it's trueI never wanted anyone like thisIt's all brand newYou'll feel it in my kissI'm crazy for youCrazy for youCrazy for youCrazy for you

It's all brand newI'm crazy for youAnd you know it's trueI'm crazy, crazy for youIt's all brand newI'm crazy for youAnd you know it's trueYeah, I'm crazy for youCrazy for you, baby
