As those of you who have followed this blog a while may have guessed, I'm hard at work preparing the special for next month "The Top Albums of the Rock Era". I have done this list before, but it has been awhile and it's good to listen to the albums that have come out since I prepared it.
I have already listened to 350 of the top albums; the playlist was compiled from several sources: The RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America), various Top Album Lists, Billboard, and other online and library materials. As I hinted before, the formula that was devised takes into account sales, chart position, a "Track Rating" that is unique to my ranking and is thus proprietary, and awards won. In coming up with a list of this nature, it is important to consider all of the above factors.
Since the formula will automatically calculate the order of the list when any new input is entered, it is fascinating to see the effect that each factor has on the overall ranking. I have just a few more albums to listen to, but right now the list looks solid. Every album on it is worth getting, especially if you are a fan of that artist and/or genre of music.
As I said before, it doesn't matter if its Barry Manilow or AC/DC, Garth Brooks or 50 Cent, if it's truly a great album, it will be there, and if it isn't, it won't be.
I will soon give a date on when the special will start. I will release the name of one album per day until all are revealed. That way, we can learn a bit about each one in the list, you can give your own comments, etc.
