This song became an anthem for Generation X, who not only were confused, but angry that they were confused. Unlike anthems for the Baby Boomers, which encouraged peace and understanding and changing the world, this song, and others that followed, didn't offer solutions for the world's problems or encouragement for making the situation better. Instead, Nirvana made it seem like it was common to feel bad with no hope. Which of course isn't true, but it reached hundreds of disoriented and disenfranchised youths and let them know they were not alone. While the rest of the songs in this feature give direction and a map for a better world, this song changed the world for the worse essentially telling followers that they were powerless to do anything about their lot in life and woe is me.
"Smells Like Teen Spirit"
by Nirvana
Load up on guns and bring your friends
It's fun to lose and to pretend
She's over bored and self assured
Oh no, I know a dirty word
Hello, hello, hello, how low? [x3]
Hello, hello, hello!
With the lights out, it's less dangerous
Here we are now, entertain us
I feel stupid and contagious
Here we are now, entertain us
A mulatto
An albino
A mosquito
My libido
Yay! [x3]
I'm worse at what I do best
And for this gift I feel blessed
Our little group has always been
And always will until the end
Hello, hello, hello, how low? [x3]
Hello, hello, hello!
With the lights out, it's less dangerous
Here we are now, entertain us
I feel stupid and contagious
Here we are now, entertain us
A mulatto
An albino
A mosquito
My Libido
Yay! [x3]
And I forget just why I taste
Oh yeah, I guess it makes me smile
I found it hard, it was hard to find
Oh well, whatever, nevermind
Hello, hello, hello, how low? [x3]
Hello, hello, hello!
With the lights out, it's less dangerous
Here we are now, entertain us
I feel stupid and contagious
Here we are now, entertain us
A mulatto
An albino
A mosquito
My libido
A denial !! [x9]
