Adele Takes Six Grammys in Los Angeles

Adele, who had The Top Two Songs of 2011 on Inside the Rock Era's ranking of The Top 10 of 2011*, was the crowned winner of six Grammy Awards at the annual show last night in Los Angeles.  Adele took time out to have surgery for "recurrent vocal chord hemorrage", was back and as good as new, with a rousing performance of "Rolling in the Deep", the song that helped her win her haul of hardware.  Adele thanked her doctors who "brought my voice back" in one of her acceptance speeches.

 

"It's been the most life-changing year," she said.

Adele won Song of the Year, Record of the Year, Best Pop Solo Performance (for "Someone Like You"), Best Pop Vocal Album (21) and Best Short Form Music Video.

There were several tributes to the late Whitney Houston, who died the day before at a Los Angeles hotel, including a cover of "I Will Always Love You" sung by Jennifer Hudson.  LL Cool J, host of the ceremony, said a prayer for Houston as the awards show opened.

Another highlight was the reuniting of the Beach Boys, who performed together for the first time in two decades to celebrate their 50th anniversary.  Glen Campbell, who once was a member of the group, watched from near the stage, and later performed in his own tribute.  Campbell, who was recently diagnosed with Altzheimer's, has announced that he would do one more tour and then retire from the music business.  Campbell was presented with a Lifetime Achievement Award earlier in the day.

"Thank y'all so much," Campbell said, after a rousing rendition of "Rhinestone Cowboy" during which he showed no sign of disability. 

Alicia Keys and Bonnie Raitt also sang a tribute to Etta James, who died last month.

The Foo Fighters won five awards for for Best Rock Album (Wasting Light), Best Rock Song and Best Rock Performance for the song "Walk", Best Longform Music Video for "Back and Forth" and Best Hard Rock/Metal Performance for "White Limo".

Bon Iver was voted the Best New Artist.
